On the Eastern Shore of Maryland lies the incredible marshes and waterways of the Blackwater National Wildlife Regure. It is a favorite place of mine to visit and paint. This scene is off the main drive. I was captivated by how serene the expansive view was against the drama in the sky and wanted to capture that moment of awe. I began this painting by creating a monochromatic underpainting using an indigo blue hard pastel and odorless mineral spirits for all the land shapes. I finished with a variety of soft pastels using my lightest lights to capture the clouds instead of white.
