This is a larger painting of a favorite scene I have painted several times at a private waterfowl sanctuary in a town near my home that was sold this year and is no longer accessible. Each painting has had its own personality and though the elements may be the same, how I begin and finish changes the mood. This time I used a local color underpainting of hard pastels washed in with odorless mineral spirits from several reference photos taken in the past and my memories of painting en plein air. The intense sun sparkles on the water was the inspiration for painting this scene. They made the scene that is relatively tranquil come alive and I wanted to capture that since I can never paint in this location again.
