There is a hidden cove in a village near me that tells the story of Eastern Shore watermen in Maryland. It is a place where workboats dock at the end of the day and from which they leave to crab or catch fish or tong for oysters. On this day I was struck by the then and now story that the cove told with the wreck of an almost completely submerged hull of a work boat juxtaposed with the fully intact workboat docked across from it. The crystal clear light of a late Autumn afternoon added to the inspiration for wanting to capture this moment in time and the reflections of time story it told. I began with an underpainting of indigo blue, burnt sienna and blue violet and olive green hard pastels with an alcohol wash and finished with a variety of soft pastels.
