This was painted in my studio from a sketch I made while in Rabbit Hash, KY, a small town on the Ohio River whose mayor is always a dog chosen from among those living in the town. Gus, though not the mayor, welcomed me none the less and went about his business lying in the street. Rabbit Hash is a wonderful mixture of old parts and new "industry" including a fabulous
BBQ pit supplied by the wood pile Gus was guarding. I used mostly soft pastels on Pastelbord, hoping to let some of the rustic texture come through as well as the feel of the May morning heat beating down.
