This is a plein air painting using soft pastels as well as an under painting using soft pastels as a wash. Here in Southwest Florida it is always necessary to find shade! This early morning I was in the streets of downtown Fort Myers, I was searching for a place in the shade that would allow me to paint comfortably and not in the full sun. Once in the cool shadows of this alley way, the sunlit scene across the street was almost glowing in comparison. There was lots of activity going on in the cool alleyway while the pristine umbrellas and tables across the street sat quietly waiting in the brilliant morning sun. The juxtaposition of the two scenes was exciting to capture along with the the strong Notan design of the composition.
